The South Vietnamese Community is a significant part of this park and the Vietnam story. A 12' x 4' granite map of South Vietnam will be housed underneath the east pavilion. For those who fought and/or lived in South Vietnam as soldiers and citizens, you will be able to locate your post of duty and your homeland. A greater understanding of their deployment and the sacrifices they made will give their children, grandchildren, and all of us a sense of history and appreciation of the past.
AGENT ORANGE/ POST TRAUMATIC STRESS/ TOXIC EXPOSURE
This pavilion will be a reminder of the devastating result that combat can have on those who are engaged in war. The importance of these issues cannot be understated for all veterans and their families who have and are enduring these conditions.
A rotunda at the center of the park will house a bronze statue of the Battle Cross. With light shining through a skylight in the rotunda, the American Bald Eagle in flight will form a protective shadow on this symbol of a fallen soldier.
EDUCATION CENTER & VETERAN SERVICES
A theatre will provide the opportunity for the public to learn about, and see films on military service, patriotism and public service. A more expansive area will be available for classroom settings or large events. The other half of this building will house offices and conference rooms, including resources for veterans. We will partner with local, state and federal veteran programs. This will fill a significant need in the East Valley for those services and reduce the travel time for many veterans.
WALK OF TIME
Welcome Home Veterans Park is centered on the concept of a circular Walk of Time. Upon entering the park from the east, this Walk of Time will have exhibits recognizing those who served in America's wars beginning with the Revolutionary War through the Korean War. The path continues south to the highlight of the park, the Vietnam Wall Memorial. The Wall serves as a reminder to welcome home the 58,307 souls to Arizona who never received that welcome. Continuing back north are areas for future exhibits dedicated to those serving post-Vietnam, including the Enduring Freedom efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Our hope is to instill a greater appreciation for the collective effort protecting our freedom, as well as for the individuals throughout time who have taken up arms toward that mission.
WALK OF TRANQUILITY
This will be an area where visitors can take a moment to experience peace and calmness. the serenity of the walk can be internalized and help in the healing process.
